Workshop: Roller-compacted concrete dams – Design and Construction
Information
Date
Thursday, May 28, Afternoon/Midday (4 hours)
Title
Workshop: Roller-compacted concrete dams – Design and Construction
Content
This workshop addresses the essential aspects of designing and constructing Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) dams, combining technical fundamentals with practical decision-making criteria. It will analyze the correct site selection and overall dam layout, considering key geological and geotechnical factors to reduce risks and cost overruns. The selection of construction equipment will also be reviewed, evaluating its impact on the dam's quality, safety, and performance. Additionally, the workshop will cover the use of impermeable membranes in complex conditions and the importance of proper concrete mix design to ensure the project's quality and functionality.

Workshop: Sedimentation in Dams, State of the Art
Information
Date
Friday May 29, 2026, 8 AM – 12 Noon
Title
Workshop: Sedimentation in Dams, State of the Art
Content
Sedimentation of reservoirs is a worldwide concern as the process diminishes the useful life and proper functioning of dam projects to the detriment of beneficiaries. And, to a greater or lesser extent, all on-stream projects and even some off-stream projects suffer or will suffer sediment impacts over their lifetime.
This workshop will consist of recent case studies presented by leading experts in the field with lessons learned from a global array of projects dealing with sediment in reservoirs and its management. The workshop will be divided into presentations by the invited speakers, followed by a short panel with the presenters and discussion by all attendees.

1:00pm - 6:00pm
Title
Workshop: Embankment Dams - Design and Construction
Content
This workshop brings together seven internationally renowned experts to present the latest global advances in the design and construction of embankment dams. Topics include worldwide experience with high rockfill dams, asphalt cores and deep cut-off walls; modern practices in rockfill behavior and construction; recent innovations from China; the use of geomembranes and asphalt cores as barrier systems; and updated guidelines on internal erosion. The program concludes with an overview of the current state of practice in numerical modeling to evaluate the performance of embankment dams during design, construction, and operation.

Workshop: Risk-Informed Design, Risk-Informed Decision
Making and Dam Safety
Information
Date
Friday, May 29th Full day (8 hours)
Title
Workshop: Risk-Informed Design, Risk-Informed Decision Making and Dam Safety
Content
Risk informed decision making (RIDM) and risk informed design (RID) are related but distinct concepts. RIDM is a process that uses risk insights to inform broader decisions, while RID is a design approach that integrates risk considerations into the design process. In essence, RIDM is an approach for making informed decisions, while RID is a specific design methodology that leverages risk information. The workshop will be divided into the four questions listed below with 3 speakers that share real examples per question. Question 1: How does risk influence our decision-making at different project stages? Question 2: What challenges have you encountered when integrating risk insights into design? Question 3: In your experience, what are the objectives owners have in managing risks and what decision criteria do they apply in achieving these objectives (e.g., safety, cost, schedule)? Question 4: How do you navigate standards in a risk-informed approach to design?
